“Reflections on EU projects: successful bidding and project management”

The School of Economics and Business Administration of the International Hellenic University (IHU) would like to invite you to the next presentation in the Research Seminar Series. Lampros Stergioulas, Reader at the University of Brunel, Department of Information Systems and Computing, will provide a talk on “Reflections on EU projects: successful bidding and project management”.
The purpose of the Research Seminar Series is to bring together the academic and business community by presenting contemporary research topics in Finance, Business, Marketing, Accounting and Economics, among others. Through these seminars, as an international centre of knowledge, innovation and research, at the crossroads of Southern Europe, the IHU attempts to further strengthen its strategic role in academic excellence. Drawing on the experience of outstanding Greek and international academics, working papers are presented on a regular basis, with the aim of establishing a meeting point for active researchers.

Speaker information:
Lampros K. Stergioulas is Reader in the Department of Information Systems and Computing at Brunel University, United Kingdom. A qualified chartered engineer, he has studied Informatics and Physics at the University of Athens, and received an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Liverpool. Dr Stergioulas has co-authored 4 books and published over 150 papers in journals and international conferences. He has held many national and EU grants in information systems, human-centred communications and computing, medical and health informatics, and signal processing. He has wide experience in managing research projects, and has been principal investigator in numerous EU projects, and overall coordinator of several research projects. He is currently coordinating the TEL-Map EU project on Technology Enhanced Learning. He is also currently Chair of the SIG3.9 Special Interest Group of IFIP, and one of the academic leads in the UK’s RIGHT network on medical process simulation and modelling. His research interests include Information Systems, Intelligent Information Processing, Educational Information Systems, Technology-Enhanced Learning, Healthcare Modelling and Healthcare Informatics.

Presentation’s content:
Drawing on his 15-year experience of participation/coordination of EU projects, Dr Lampros Stergioulas will reflect on successful bidding and management for EU projects. Sharing relevant experiences from Dr Stergioulas’s research areas of interest, which include Technology-Enhanced Learning and Roadmapping, the talk aims to give some observations on proposal preparation and project management for EU projects, and attempts to offer some insights, of more general use, on the ingredients of success in EU projects. The presentation will include an outlook of EU funding, with a particular but not exclusive, focus on Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), discussing the current perspective and the future prospects, an overview of Dr Stergioulas’s experience in EU projects, and some timely reflections on the EU bidding process and the challenges of project management and coordination. Dr Stergioulas will also discuss the future of the EU funding programmes (in particular FP8) and the European Commission’s new research strategy, in the light of the recent Green Paper consultation and the recent research impact assessment.
