Biomedicine and Law

This course focuses on biomedical applications, presenting the legal framework currently in force in the EU, that governs a) the patient/doctor relationships (medical law), b) clinical research, c) end-of-life issues, d) assisted reproduction, e) processing of sensitive health and genetic data, and f) human enhancement. New topics, such as biobanking, implant technology, and neuro-law will also be explored. Basic instruments, such as the Oviedo Convention and the EU Regulations on Clinical Trials and Data Protection, as well as important case-law of the European Court on Human Rights, related to assisted reproduction and end-of-life issues will be analyzed, and students will have the opportunity to discuss case-studies in all the above fields, under the light of these material.
