Alternative Tourism

Alternative tourism as well as it synonym sustainable tourism has become a fashionable term within the last two to three decades. This course investigates the development of concepts, the definitions and the application of alternative tourism with respect to practical applications and operation. Although sustainability is a key term for the development of alternative tourism there is still a lot of confusion relating to the meaning of sustainability in the tourism sector. The course first will look back into the history of the development of alternative forms of tourism. The primary concern of alternative tourism approaches is to critique the forms of traditional tourism. This debate is followed by the definition of sustainable development in general and sustainable tourism in detail. Also the implications of the concept will be discussed. The opportunities and constraints of touristic destinations will be identified by using different approaches like swot-analysis, carrying capacity models or community based tourism.
